Me, Mom and the Cat: Reflections of a Caregiver

ISBN: 978-0-8059-9394-3
by Mae Poser As her dementia deepened, it became more and more difficult for Mom to care for herself and live in her own home. In October of 1987, my life, Moms life, and my cat, Elizabeths, life changed forever when I brought Mom to live with us. As a child, we had many and varied pets, but no cats. It was only after she came to live with me that Moms aversion to Elizabeth became apparent. Life with Mom was filled with almost daily humorous scenarios, some involving cats and some not. Moms wonderful sense of humor about her dementia and my sense of humor about the cat made an otherwise sad situation bearable. Written in a journalistic form, Me, Mom and the Cat relates these funny stories spanning the ten years my mother lived with me, as well as her inevitable decline and death in 1997. About the Author The youngest of four children, Mae Poser has lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, all of her life. She holds a degree in health information management from the Community College of Allegheny County. She was widowed in 1987 at age forty-seven, the same year her mother came to live with her. No stranger to writing, Ms. Poser has published poetry and has won two short-story awards at the Westmoreland County Arts and Heritage Fair.
